So I finally took the plunge and upgraded to Hardy Heron and am generally pleased. The one thing I noticed which I did not care for was the behaviour of suspend and resume. It worked great under Gutsy Gibbon but after my upgrade it was slow to return from suspend.
The laptop went to sleep in about the same amount of time, but when resuming, it would sit at a black screen with a single underscore in the top left corner for about a minute before going back to X.
I could switch back to X via the CTRL-ALT-F7 and after the minute was up it would switch me back to console and back to X. It seemed obvious that something was slowing the resume process.
So, I used console access to track what was going on while the system was just sitting there and I stumbled across the folling in /var/log/daemon.log

I always use wireless on that laptop and the wired interface was set to DHCP. So I fired up the network settings and switched the interface to Roaming.
After that the resume only took about 10 seconds. Woo Woo.
